For me, drawing is a way of seeing and thinking. It is a means of expressing meaning and emotion, and it is my favorite method for storytelling. I do not remember when I started to draw as a child, but I hope I will continue mark-making and visual storytelling for as long as I can pick up a pencil, pen or brush.
As an architect, retired after five decades of practice, place and material culture have been major interests, and drawing has been a key tool for design, for presentation, and for getting projects built. However, some of my most creative design efforts resulted in "paper architecture"! For me, drawing has consistently been a gateway to illustration, painting and other art forms as well as to architecture.
Inspiration has come to me in turn from my parents, my children, and now my grandchildren, and also from travel and the work of many other artists and colleagues.
Collaboration in the creative process is as satisfying to me as singular effort. I believe art should be shared as widely as possible and the internet allows this to happen in amazing ways. This website has been assembled to share my work. Perhaps this portfolio will spark conversation or lead to an opportunity to collaborate; or perhaps some of these images will serve as a source of inspiration for others. Enjoy!
This ongoing series of drawings, paintings, and prints documents Spirit-of-Place / Genius Loci at selected sites that I have found to be special Places with exemplary qualities after visiting them, often several times over the years. The art in this series will attempt to interpret the Context (cultural, geographic, & topographic), Scale, Symbolic and Experiential qualities as well as Formal and Technical features of each unique Place. Pieces will be added here as they are completed; its a work in progress!

The once-thriving Abbeys are now ruins, having been dissolved by Henry VIII in the 16th Century. Even as ruins these building complexes communicate much about their builders and occupants over time.
